The Wombats have a simple playbook, relying on their skills rather than tactics for their success. There are really only two plays the wombats rely on:
- Throw the ball
- Catch the ball
Here’s a picture to help you out
Master these skills and victory is guaranteed. Here’s some of our favourite plays incorporating catching and throwing the ball:
Head Shot
While a dodgeball to the head is not out in some leagues, a head shot gives you a massive psychological advantage. Continuous hits to the face will bring tears to even the toughest opposition. The aim of this play is concussion and pain and works well in conjunction with the groin shot. Practice this against a team of children to see the full effect of the play.
Groin Shot
The groin shot is all about physical dominance. Usually a weakness of the strongest teams, groin shots will bring any team to their knees. Mixing it up with the Head Shot, teams will be in doubt when they go to block. Continuous groin shots may result in vomiting by the other team, creating a slippery surface for the opposition to deal with.
No Look Throw
Look anywhere except where you are aiming while you throw. Sounds simple, but in practice it is one of the hardest shots in dodgeball. While the most basic No Look Throw is done while looking at another opponent, the Wombats consider this a rookie move. A No Look Throw from the Wombats will usually come while the Wombat is looking at his watch, the scoreboard or the bottom of his shoe.
Two Ball Throw
AKA, the oldest trick in the book. With two balls in hand, lob one ball up for an easy catch. The opposing player will think an easy catch is on offer. Distracted by the easy catch, you have the opportunity now for major damage. Best used with a Head Shot or Groin Shot, you can now fire a dodgeball for a free out.
One Handed Catch
Self explanitory play, but the most effective play in the playbook. They say “catches win matches”, but they also say “two hands for beginners”. As Wombats are far from beginners, the only option is to catch with one hand. While catches are easiest at the back of the court, a one handed catch in front of the attack line will strike fear into opposing throwers.
